Town & Country c1936

Town & Country was a line of skin treatments and cosmetics used by Helena Rubinstein as early as 1934, however by 1936, it had evolved into two separate perfumes as well.

Fragrance Compositions
:

Country, a light yet sharp and tangy chypre perfume, evoking the fresh woodlands, was made specifically to be worn with daytime apparel, tweeds and sportswear. I consider the Country fragrance to be similar in vein to Blue Grass by Elizabeth Arden and Tweed by Lentheric. There are no published notes anywhere so I am using a sample from an old bottle I had. This is what I detect.

  • Top notes: galbanum, bergamot, lemon, juniper, lavender, sage, coriander
  • Middle notes: jasmine, lily of the valley, rose, orris, carnation, fern, pine
  • Base notes: sandalwood, oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver, ambergris, musk, tonka, cedar

Town, the gay, sophisticated and exotic perfume was made for fancy evening dress, chiffons, organdies, sparkling jewels and luxurious furs. There are no published notes anywhere so I am using a sample from an old bottle I had. This is what I detect. The Town fragrance was an aldehydic floral oriental. It begins with an aldehydic citrus top, followed by an opulent floral heart, layered over an animalic, powdery base.

  • Top notes: aldehydes, bergamot, coriander, neroli, petitgrain, peach, cassie
  • Middle notes: rose, jasmine, carnation, ylang ylang, cinnamon, gardenia, orange blossom
  • Base notes: ambergris, sandalwood, patchouli, musk, oakmoss, opoponax, vanilla, labdanum, tonka

Country Eau de Toilette as well as its counterpart Town Eau de Toilette was housed inside of a tall, skyscraper shaped bottle that has a patent date of November 9, 1937.

The perfumes were also housed in round bottles etched with town and country scenes.
